In a move that bridges classic storytelling with cutting-edge technology, The Walt Disney Company and OpenAI have entered a landmark multi-year agreement. The partnership will integrate Disney's iconic characters and worlds into OpenAI's Sora and ChatGPT platforms, while establishing new frameworks for responsible AI development in entertainment.
Key Elements of the Agreement:
· Character Access for Fans: Sora will gain licensed access to over 200 characters from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars for users to create and share short-form social videos, expected to begin in early 2026. ChatGPT Images will also generate still images from this IP.
· Strategic Investment & Adoption: Disney will make a $1 billion equity investment in OpenAI and become a major API customer, using the technology to build new tools for Disney+ and internal employee productivity.
· Content Distribution: A curated selection of fan-created Sora videos will be made available for streaming on Disney+.
· Shared Safety Commitment: Both companies emphasize a joint commitment to responsible AI, including age-appropriate controls, creator rights protections, and safeguards against harmful content.
The collaboration positions Disney at the forefront of exploring generative AI's role in creative expansion, while providing OpenAI with a foundational blueprint for major content licensing.
As stated by Disney CEO Bob Iger, the alliance aims to give fans "richer and more personal ways to connect" with beloved stories. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman framed the partnership as a model for how AI companies and creative leaders can work together responsibly.
