Anthropic has announced Claude for Education, a version of its conversational AI model specifically developed for higher education institutions. This new offering is designed to help universities incorporate AI into teaching, learning, and administrative functions ensuring that educators, students, and institutions are actively involved in shaping how AI supports education.

Rather than offering generic AI solutions, Claude for Education provides a tailored, secure experience that respects the unique needs of academic environments.

What’s Included in Claude for Education

1. Learning Mode: Encouraging Thoughtful Engagement

A key feature of Claude for Education is Learning mode, which supports students in developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Instead of simply giving answers, Claude:

  1. Encourages students to consider how they would approach a problemt
  2. Uses Socratic questioning to deepen understanding.
  3. Emphasizes core academic principles.
  4. Provides templates for assignments like study guides, outlines, and research papers.
  5. Learning mode is part of Projects, which allows students to organize their conversations with Claude around specific topics or assignments.

2. Campus-Wide Access

Anthropic is partnering with universities to make Claude accessible across entire campuses. Institutions like:

  1. Northeastern University: Anthropic’s first university design partner, offering Claude to 50,000+ students, faculty, and staff across its global system. This partnership builds on Northeastern’s long-standing academic focus on AI.
  2. London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE): Ensures equitable access to AI tools for its students while focusing on responsible use and social impact.
  3. Champlain College: Uses Claude to support workforce readiness, ensuring students gain practical experience with AI tools in real-world academic and career settings.

3. Programs for Students

Two new initiatives are being introduced to directly support student engagement:

  1. Claude Campus Ambassadors: A program for students interested in promoting AI learning initiatives on their campuses.
  2. API Credit Program for Student Projects: Offering resources to support student building projects using Claude.

4. Academic and Industry Collaborations

Anthropic is working with trusted partners to integrate Claude into existing educational systems:

  1. Internet2: A member-driven nonprofit focused on secure, high-performance technology for education and research. Anthropic is joining Internet2 and participating in a NET+ service evaluation.
  2. Instructure (Canvas LMS): Anthropic is working with Instructure to provide equitable AI integration into the learning experience via Canvas, widely used across higher education.

Practical Use Cases for Claude in Education

Claude for Education supports a variety of academic and administrative needs, such as:

  1. For Students: Drafting literature reviews with citations, solving math problems with step-by-step help, and refining thesis statements with feedback.
