The landscape of software development is shifting. As AI coding tools become more sophisticated, they're evolving from simple code companions into proactive collaborators. Today, Google is stepping into this new era with the launch of Antigravity, a development platform designed to handle complete, multi-step software tasks with significant autonomy.

Currently in a free public preview, Antigravity aims to be a central hub for developers looking to integrate AI more deeply into their workflow.

More Than an IDE: A Shift Towards Autonomous Management

At its core, Antigravity includes a modern, AI-integrated coding editor with features like tab completions and inline commands. However, its defining feature is a new approach to how developers interact with AI.

The platform introduces two distinct views. The first is the familiar Editor, a synchronous workspace for hands-on coding. The second, and more innovative, is the Manager—a "mission control" center that allows developers to oversee multiple AI assistants working on different tasks simultaneously in the background. This asynchronous model means you could have one AI researching a solution in one workspace while you focus on a separate, complex problem in another.

Designed for Trust and Clarity

A common challenge with advanced AI tools is understanding how they arrived at a solution. Antigravity addresses this by grouping the AI's actions into logical tasks and producing clear Artifacts. Instead of a bewildering log of every micro-action or just a final block of code, you get practical deliverables like implementation plans, task lists, and even screen recordings. These artifacts provide a verifiable paper trail, making it easier to trust and validate the AI's work.

A Collaborative Feedback Loop

Recognizing that AI isn't infallible, the platform is built for continuous iteration. Developers can leave feedback directly on these Artifacts, using comment threads similar to those in Google Docs. The AI can then incorporate this guidance without stopping its workflow, creating a more natural and efficient collaboration cycle. The system also learns from completed tasks and feedback, building an internal knowledge base to improve its performance over time.

Availability and Access

Google Antigravity is available now in public preview for individuals at no cost and is compatible with MacOS, Linux, and Windows. It offers access to several leading AI models, including Google's Gemini 3, Anthropic's Claude Sonnet 4.5, and OpenAI's GPT-OSS, giving developers flexibility in their choice of underlying intelligence.

By moving beyond simple prompt-and-response interactions, Antigravity represents a tangible step toward a future where AI handles not just snippets of code, but entire development processes. For developers ready to explore this next stage of AI-assisted coding, the platform is now available for download.
