OpenAI has announced two key updates aimed at expanding access to its AI tools: the broad launch of its affordable ChatGPT Go subscription tier and plans to begin testing advertisements within the platform.
The company is making ChatGPT Go, previously available in 171 countries, accessible in the United States and all other regions where ChatGPT operates. For $8 USD per month, the tier provides enhanced features like extended messaging, image creation, file uploads, and access to the Memory function.
In parallel, OpenAI stated it will start testing ads in the coming weeks for users on the free and Go subscription tiers in the U.S. The company emphasized that its higher-tier subscriptions—Pro, Business, and Enterprise—will remain ad-free.
Principles for Advertising
OpenAI outlined several principles for its approach to ads, stressing a focus on user trust:
· Answer Independence: Ads will not influence ChatGPT's responses, which will remain based on helpfulness.
· Conversation Privacy: User conversations will be kept private from advertisers, and personal data will not be sold.
· User Control: Users will have controls to turn off ad personalization, clear related data, and provide feedback on ads.
Initially, the test will feature clearly labeled, relevant sponsored links at the bottom of answers in a conversation. Ads will not be shown to users under 18 and will be restricted near topics like health or politics.
The company framed advertising as a way to support broader access to its AI tools while maintaining its commitment to developing valuable products that users choose to pay for directly.
