OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Atlas, a new web browser designed to integrate its AI technology directly into the web browsing experience. The move positions the browser not just as a tool for viewing pages, but as an active assistant that can understand context and help complete tasks without requiring users to switch between applications.

The company stated that Atlas addresses the limitation of having ChatGPT operate solely in a separate window. By building the AI directly into the browser, Atlas allows ChatGPT to see the same page a user is viewing, enabling help with questions and tasks in real-time.

Core Features include Memory and Control

A central function of Atlas is "Browser Memories." This optional feature allows ChatGPT to remember key details from the websites you visit. This stored context can then be used to assist with future tasks, such as compiling a summary of job postings you viewed the previous week or continuing research on a topic you had been exploring.

User control over this data is a stated priority. Memories are private to the user's account and can be viewed or archived in settings. Deleting browsing history also deletes any associated memories. Users can also disable page visibility on a site-by-site basis using a toggle in the address bar, preventing ChatGPT from accessing content or creating memories on specific pages.

Agent Mode: Automating Tasks Within the Browser

The most advanced feature announced is "Agent Mode," which enables ChatGPT to perform actions on a user's behalf directly within the browser. In practice, this could involve tasks like researching products, adding items to a cart, or compiling data from multiple documents into a brief.

OpenAI has implemented safeguards for this feature, noting it is an early experience and may make mistakes. Agent Mode cannot run code, download files, or access other applications on a user's computer. It is also programmed to pause for user confirmation on websites for financial institutions. The company advises users to monitor the agent's activities and offers a "logged-out mode" to limit its access to sensitive accounts.

The company explicitly cautioned that Agent Mode carries risks, including the potential for hidden malicious instructions on a webpage to override the agent's intended behavior.

Availability and Future Plans

ChatGPT Atlas is available starting today for macOS users on Free, Plus, Pro, and Teams plans. A beta is available for Business, Enterprise, and Education users. Versions for Windows, iOS, and Android are in development.

Agent Mode is launching in preview for Plus, Pro, and Business users.

Looking forward, OpenAI's plans for Atlas include support for multiple user profiles, improved tools for developers, and features that allow website owners to optimize how the ChatGPT agent interacts with their sites.

The launch of ChatGPT Atlas represents a practical step toward a more integrated and automated web experience, where AI handles routine tasks directly within the browser environment.
