OpenAI has introduced Study Mode, a new ChatGPT feature designed to help students work through problems step-by-step rather than receive direct answers. The feature is now available to logged-in users on Free, Plus, Pro, and Team plans, with a planned rollout for ChatGPT Edu in the coming weeks.

How Study Mode Works

Study Mode guides learners using techniques informed by established learning principles, including:

  1. Guided questioning to encourage critical thinking
  2. Scaffolded explanations that break down complex topics
  3. Knowledge checks (quizzes, open-ended questions) with feedback
  4. Adjustable difficulty based on user responses

Unlike standard ChatGPT interactions, Study Mode avoids providing immediate answers, instead prompting users to engage with the material.

Development and Testing

OpenAI states that Study Mode was developed with input from educators and learning science research. Early testing involved college students, some of whom reported positive experiences:

  1. One described it as a "24/OpenAI Launches Study Mode in ChatGPT to Support Student Learning
  2. Another noted its usefulness for multi-hour tutoring sessions on technical topics.

However, OpenAI acknowledges that the feature currently relies on custom system instructions (pre-programmed prompts), which may lead to occasional inconsistencies.

Future Plans

The company is also collaborating with researchers, including Stanford’s SCALE Initiative, to study AI’s role in education.
