Creating realistic digital humans that can move, talk, and respond in real-time has been a long-standing challenge in augmented reality. TaoAvatar steps into this space with a practical solution creating a lifelike 3D full-body avatars that operate smoothly on mobile and AR devices.

These avatars aren’t just static models. The pose, gesture, and facial expression can easily be controlled, and they respond dynamically to user interactions. TaoAvatar manages all this while keeping memory and processing demands low, a crucial factor for devices with limited resources.

What Makes TaoAvatar Stand Out?

1. High-Fidelity, Low-Overhead Design: TaoAvatar builds its avatars from multi-view camera sequences, preserving fine-grained details in facial expressions and body motion. But unlike other systems that strain device resources, TaoAvatar uses a technique called 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) and a distilled MLP-based network to keep things light and fast.

2. Real-Time Performance Across Devices: The avatars are optimized for real-time rendering and operate at 90 FPS on high-definition stereo devices. Even on mobile hardware, performance holds up, making it a suitable option for AR experiences that require responsiveness and realism.

3. Built with Flexibility in Mind: Whether it’s e-commerce live streaming, holographic communication, or immersive AR applications, TaoAvatar can adapt. The avatars are driven by audio-visual input, with natural gestures and facial expressions synchronized with speech using an Audio2BS model.

4. Efficient Pipeline from Start to Finish: The process starts with a personalized parametric human template. Then, a StyleUnet-based network handles non-rigid deformation, think pose shifts and expression changes. The final step distills this into a lighter model that can be deployed broadly without sacrificing fidelity.

Demos on Apple Vision Pro

The team behind TaoAvatar has already demonstrated its capabilities on the Apple Vision Pro. From digital agents that can speak and respond naturally to avatars that react to changes in lighting conditions, the demos highlight both performance and polish.

TaoAvatar represents a well-engineered approach to full-body avatar creation. It offers a balanced mix of quality, control, and real-time performance — without overpromising or overspending on resources. As AR continues to grow, especially on platforms like the Apple Vision Pro, technologies like TaoAvatar are setting practical benchmarks for what real-time digital human interaction can look like.
